Industrial Age democracy promised top down infallibility, and Industrial Age media broadcast its support. But digital age media is available to all, and by casting doubt on elites has drawn the public towards nihilism. If you want to understand media and politics, this is a great place to start.

Enjoyed. Fifth Wave is accurate assessment. Theory would be stronger with analysis from Thomas Spence, Strong Interaction (Univ of Chicago Press, 1992). It will always be interesting to see how the "public" reaches various homeostatic states, through positive and negative feedback loops. However: I suspect elites/authorities will learn how to read the various expansions and contractures of the public, and eventually conduct them, like a symphony. Anyway, this book made me think.

So says Arnold Kling in the introduction to Gurri's book, and I can't help but agree. Books claiming to diagnose and offer cures for "what the problem is" or aiming to describe "our current predicament" have always left a sour, often partisan, taste in my mouth. And although Gurri has his political sympathies, his book comes closest to accurately describing just what sort of situation we have on our hands - politically, socially, informationally, technologically. If you're at all interested in politics, movements, information, knowledge, political theory, etc., this book will give you something to think about. Gurri doesn't give the reader any sexy solutions to what he sees as problem our society current faces, but what he lacks in the solutions department he makes up for in analysis.Perhaps that's enough. Enough, at least, to provide a novel starting point for a conversation that desperately needs to be had.

If you do not read this book then you don't understand what is going on.

Martin Gurri's "Revolt of the Public" is a timely book reflecting on the impact of the internet on political culture. The book argues that the concept of political and intellectual authority is an artifact of information scarcity. With the rise of the internet and information abundance, authority as source of political and institutional power has taken a beating and has led to the rise of a variety of movements rejecting the current state of affairs. These movements are described by Gurri as nihilistic because of their rejection of the legitimacy of the institutions running society. Gurri convincingly shows that this political style has gone global, stylistically unifying seemingly disparate movements such as the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, the Israeli Social Justice Protests of 2011, and U.S. Tea Party Movement.Gurri contends that many of these movements find themselves in a bind as their critiques are premised on the fundamental rottenness of the system, even as they demand these rotten institutions usher in their preferred utopian projects. The one group that can be said to have meaningfully succeeded is the U.S. Tea Party, whose rejection of government regulation and taxation fit in comfortably with the right most wing of the U.S. Republican Party. Donald Trump, analyzed by Gurri in the book's excellent 2018 post-script the second edition, can be seen as an extension of the Tea Party's institutional nihilism. The book has some limitations. It mentions Black Lives Matter only in passing, even though it could be argued that Black Lives Matter's political demands for the reduction of state power in the criminal justice system have, like the Tea Party, had some political success. If the shared anti-statism of Black Lives Matter and the Tea Party (or for that matter, Brexit) are the only way to mount a successful mass movement in the age of internet, we are probably heading towards a deeply anarchic political future. A future in which Gurri's proposed solutions to the problems posed by nihilistic internet politics, (e.g., using the internet to make the legislative and regulatory process more open to public comment) feel insufficient to resolve the issues. These criticisms aside, this is a timely book on an important topic. Also, in addition to being a fascinating read, the book is beautifully put together by Stripe Press. Unpretentious. Encompassing. Honest. Well structured. That's what I can say about this massively underappreciated book. This is that hidden gem you stumble upon that you can read and all of a sudden start to make sense out of this overwhelmingly inexplicable reality. The fact that this is a re-hash of a 2014 book makes it all the more impressive. Here, one snippet. He literally predicted Donald Trump in 2014:"After [Obama's] defeat in 2010, the president decided on a strategy that placed the public's chosen weapon against authority -negation [understood as repudiation of the institution he presided]-at the center of government. He divorced his political personality from his official position, a paradox best explained as a desperate response to sever external pressures. His personal success made it likely that he will have imitators."Gurri knows his limitations. He rightly understands that no one can foresee the future. He correctly sees that every issue has an alternative sustaining narrative. He backs up his analysis with empirical examples. Spain, Israel, Egypt, Occupy... all examples of a public in revolt that share the same characteristics: hyper-connected, part of the middle class, young, clueless about governing, willing to dismantle the very system that is allowing them to protest in the first place, and above all, angry. One aspect he does not dwell enough in, and I believe, is the influence of social networks and their "engagement optimization" on the electorate. But in general, his thesis is pretty robust. His read of Trump era --the last and only updated chapter of the book-- is very interesting. It fits perfectly with the dissolution of mainstream media's legitimacy, and from there, Donald Trump follows. It charges that Fake News is just the narrated vehicle perpetrated by media elites to exempt themselves of guilt. It charges that Russia's meddling is an overly exaggerated plot-line (here, I must point out that he falls victim to his own narrative, stating that there's no way to prove Russian's bots tipped the election in favor of DT. Well of course that causation can't be proved, just like the charge --completely missed in the book, by the way-- that the timing of Comey's acquittal of Hillary was paramount to Trump's unexpected upset victory). In the end, it is (and has to be) an exercise in speculation. And there, I have no right to dispute his view. But go ahead and read it yourself. This is not intended to be a summary of the book.I highly recommend it for anyone trying to make sense of how we got here. Gurri deserves much more praise than what he's getting.
