Having had the honor of meeting Virginia Prodan a couple of years ago as part of a service organization we are both members of, I have known bits and pieces of her life under former Romanian Dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. However, until getting my copy of her long anticipated autobiography and reading it cover to cover today (I could not put it down), I had no idea of the depth of her involvement in defending Christians in that era, nor of the personal danger she encountered. Not since Whittaker Chambers' book "Witness" have we had the opportunity to peek through the veil of communism--in this case a particularly harsh form of communism that was ultimately overthrown by the people. Virginia's first person account is riveting, and also gets to the very heart of trusting our Lord in difficult times. I usually don't even review the books I read, but not only am I moved to write this review, I've already ordered another copy being sent to a friend. Buy, Read, Share this book. (From a major prestigious publishing house, Tyndale.)

A perfect book for summer reading because you will not want to put it down! I recommend this book for everyone but especially for younger Americans who might not have been taught proper history. If I could afford it I would hand this book to every young person I see carelessly wearing a Che t-shirt or who spout that communism has some virtue. Virginia Prodan lived to tell us about what it is really like to live under communism - dangerous, stifling, robotic....anything but free . She also lived to spread the message of peace and real freedom that can only come through Jesus Christ. Her story is riveting and shared so well that I felt as though I was watching it happen. I wanted to help her and protect her as she courageously moves through a very hard childhood. I was cheering her on as she pushed toward and achieved her goals and chewing my nails as she took on religious freedom in the courts of a country that offers none. Holding my breath as......I don't want to be a spoiler so I can't go on! This is a must read and must share book.

This excellent memoir, written in simple prose, begins in 1984 with the most terrifying moment in author Virginia Prodan's life--when a six-foot-ten man comes into her legal offices, presumably for help, and then announces matter-of-factly, "I'm here to kill you."Without explaining what happens next, Prodan flashes back to her childhood in communist Romania, which in some ways resembles that of the fictitious character "Anne" of Anne of Green Gable's fame. First, she has red hair like Anne and has Anne's precocious intellect that gets her into trouble more than once. Second, her "mother" treats her like a slave. In fact, her parents don't even take her on vacation with them. She is left alone at the house to "work."Growing up she sees the horrors of communism first hand--a neighbor's parents are taken away by government agents. Fear permeates conversations because informants are everywhere. People are here one day and gone the next. Virginia decides young that she wants to be a lawyer to stand for the truth. She also eventually suspects that something is odd about her family situation because all the other siblings have darker features.Later, when she goes to live with her Aunt Cassandra in the big city of Bucharest to prepare for her entrance law exams, she is astonished that this relative, that she has never met, looks exactly like her. Aunt Cassandra also treats her like her own. She lavishes her with gifts and unconditional love, and even fasts and prays for her so she will succeed and go to law school. When people refer to her aunt as her mother, Aunt Cassandra does not deny it. Yet, this is never acknowledged. When Virginia gets out of school and becomes an independent lawyer, she discovers that the ultimate truth is a person--Jesus Christ. She also takes cases no one else will accept--those involving persecuted Christians and churches--thus, inciting the wrath of the dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu. She is roughly interrogated, threatened to conform or die, stalked, and even pushed into traffic by an obscure pedestrian. Yet, she continues to defend the oppressed and needy, and God reveals Himself to her in small and miraculous ways throughout the ordeal. This book is a powerful testimony of what God can do with one person who is willing to stand for the truth in the face of a cruel regime. If I had the resources I would send you all a copy for free. Fascinating and compelling. A book that grabs you by the shirt and won't let go."For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him" (2 Chronicles 16:9).

WOW! What a powerful and inspiring testimony! This book should be required reading for every Christian teenager in this country as an example of how God can use each of us to change the world we live in if we let Him. Who knows how God will continue to use this amazing testimony in our own country as now Virginia fights for freedom and truth here. The eternal consequences of her willingness to follow Jesus no matter what will be endless, I am sure.

WOW, this is one powerful memoir by Virginia Prodan of her life in Romania and of working as a Christian attorney in communist Romania. I knew a little about Romania and their political problems under Ceausescu, but this really opened my eyes to what was happening during his rule. She grew up in a dysfunctional family and still managed to become an attorney. When she became a Christian as a young woman, she felt called to defend other believers and churches that were in disobedience to the government. What follows is a harrowing memoir with courtroom drama, political intrigue, persecution and more under President Nicolae Ceausescu's brutal regime. Her memoir is a testament to how God's power can protect and provide even in the most difficult situations. This is a must-read for all Christians and proves, without a shadow of doubt, that anything is possible with God.
