Dr. Eben Alexander's book "Proof of Heaven" is a confusing diatribe about the possibility of life after death, based upon what he describes as an NDE experience which occurred when he developed a rare meningitis in 2008. He professes to have spoken to God (whom he calls 'Om') and to have gone to the edge of heaven. The story is a woven tale between his illness, stories about his family, scientific theory about NDEs, and lastly the actual NDE. A warning to those are thinking about reading this - the NDE sections make up only a minority of the book, which is only ~170 pages long.I appreciate Dr. Alexander's attempt to quantify what is largely unexplainable. I am a physician and as such have often struggled with the concept of NDE and have read other accounts like Don Piper's '90 Minutes in Heaven'. But I believe this book has several shortcomings which makes it difficult to completely accept what Dr. Alexander says in it:1. While he tries to compare his experience to others' NDEs, his clinical experience (i.e., coma) is not like other books I have read, in which the person had actually suffered cardiac arrest and was clinically dead. There is no mention of brain death in this book, so I can't be sure that Dr. Alexander was really near death in the same way that others were. While he was critically ill, and not expected to survive, I don't see his condition as similar to others, like Don Piper.2. The descriptions of what he remembered when he had the NDE are confusing at best (e.g., 'the earthworms-eye view') and don't match what other books have described. Dr. Alexander's descriptions and language make it difficult to follow what he was trying to describe, and I think make it more troublesome to believe as a true NDE versus just a dreamlike state that he experienced while he was in a coma. (In Dr. Alexander's defense, he does acknowledge in a chapter towards the end that his NDE was different than the 'typical' NDE).3. Dr. Alexander spends a lot of time trying to scientifically explain what happened, using conjecture and theory mixed together. But he actually offers little concrete proof that what he experienced is more than a dream rather than an NDE. (Caveat: there is one revelation at the end of the book which is consistent with what others have said about NDEs).There is no doubt that what Dr. Alexander experienced clinically is miraculous. He survived a condition which 97% of others do not. He woke up rapidly from a deep coma in ways that others do not. While it took some time for him to regain his brain function, he suffered no ill consequences as a result.There is also no doubt that Dr. Alexander believes sincerely that what he experienced was a true NDE and that it proved to him the existence of God and Heaven. The problem is that when you read the title of the book, you expect something more concrete, scientific and clear about the existence of an afterlife, and you really don't get that in this book.As a physician, I do believe that there is some sort of afterlife and that some of the concepts that Dr. Alexander puts forth in this book are intriguing, but I urge caution. If you are looking for a feel good book, a book which makes you go 'a-ha' about NDEs, or a science-based description of how NDEs could possibly represent true experiences, this isn't it. I am not sure that the perfect book exists, but this isn't it.I do urge you to read this if you are interested in NDEs, but be careful, because I fear you won't get what you expect out of it by reading it. I sure didn't.

I had a NDE after a serious motorcycle accident when I was 33 years old - I'm now 70! The experience will always be with me! Our Creators name is LOVE!!! Sometimes when I tell my story, the reactions are good and sometimes people just think the brain is reacting to the death process! I only wish I had the ability to express in words what took place, however, I now realize, that words can never express the LOVE that that I felt and the removal of all hate! Hate does not live in that realm, and can never live there! To feel totally immersed in LOVE, cannot be put into the languages of this world - I've tried and failed. I will tell you this much - all religions fail - ALL. Our creator is so far beyond this nonsense that I can't even put it in words! All I know is that I will always LOVE my creator, OM, or what ever name you want to use! I really stopped caring if people believed me or not, however, when they want to know what I experienced - I'm always happy to tell them what happened to me - as best I can - with the limitations that language can express! What a great book! Thanks to you Doctor; now others may understand what I went through! Rather you are a believer or not, Religious or Attheist, Agnostic, or what ever you are, at the very least you will come away with questions, that will at least make you wonder!!! I actually feel blessed that my Creator had me go through this in my Life - as painful as it was! It really made me look at Life in a much different way! Sorry for going on and on, but, I really appreciated this book, especially from a neurosurgeon! All I know is; that to me it was no dream! This was so different that I know it will be with me until I return to my Creator. What an experience! I thought my life was over at age 33, however, he/she, Creator, OM, Love, Truth, has shown me what Life really is! I hope all, and I mean all find what I found! Maybe, just maybe, this world or realm we live in would become a better place!

This was the most convincing book I came across while preparing for how to deal with my husbands quickly approaching death from glioblastoma.In the 2 to 3 weeks before his death he saw deceased family members: our daughter, his sister, his grandfather,and even one of our sweet dogs who had passed. This author helped to assure me that he was going to a good place...or was already there. 15 days before he died he told me he was "almost there" and then said he "felt really good". This so much comforted me because to look at him this didn't seem possible. This book made his statements more convincing.
