Book 1:When I first set upon this series, I thought this was a Space-Western. However, this is a Fantasy-Western. Though, the voice, it's beautiful. The author really captures the Wild West, and you can imagine an old sepia western movie along every step. The character he creates is intriguing with a haunted past. It's so much fun, you don't want to put the book down! The narrator, the same guy who did The Martian, did a phenomenal job as well.Book 2:Another fantastic adventure with the Coilhunter. Now you know about his past, but now he has to decide what he is going to do with his future. He wants to help people. But to do so, he has to kill people. Bad people. It's the wild west people, or as in the book, the Wild North. So strap on your guns, grab your horse, and enjoy the ride!Book 3:These books just get better and better. I really love the feel of the Wild West and TV Westerns that this author brings. There's a bit more fantasy in this novel as we have a bit of Indian-style shape shifting. This is one series you won't be able to put down!

Audible review:This book checked all the important boxes for me. It was an interesting world with an interesting story supported by a superb narrator (typical R.C. Bray narration). If you're looking for a western mixed with some steampunk, guns, and robots, this is the series for you! I wasn't sure I'd be totally into the western theme but the rest kept me hooked.I'd have to say what I enjoyed the most was the extremely interesting technology described during the Coilhunter's adventures, especially the mechanical animals! QUACK!I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more works written by Dean F. Wilson. Hopefully they'll also be narrated by R.C. Bray as well!I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The Coilhunter Chronicles (Books 1-3) by Dean. F. Wilson is an exceptional dark ride through a world of western steampunk! Strongly recommend if you enjoy these types of books. This series consists of three books, Coilhunter, Rustkiller and Dustrunner. All take place in the Wild North- a place with no laws or rules. Coilhunter is mainly focused on Nox finding his family's killer/s. Rustkiller involves Nox helping kids track down their parents in a place no one ventures and many steampunk elements. Dustrunner involves Nox being framed for murder and trying to clear his name while finding the killer/s. Dustrunner contains a little less steampunk elements than the previous books. Each book is unique yet ties together nicely, whether it be the theme or characters. It's hard to pick a favorite. I enjoyed the duck, Oddcopper (wish it would have had a larger part), and the Iron gunslinger the most. If you are listening to the audiobook, the narrator, R. C. Bray, is marvelous. He hits the characters dead on and is a perfect fit for this series. These are the steampunk books I've been waiting for. I haven’t been fully satisfied with a steampunk book for a while and this has changed that. I can’t recommend it enough. Ended up buying the ebook series as well as it will be a repeat listen/read. Older reviews mention inaccuracy with shot gun shells and grammar, those have been corrected. Should you listen or read this? Absolutely, especially if you're looking for an odd, darker, steampunk western fantasy. Be warned, if you're looking for a happy ending, you may not find it here, but yes, the ending fits well with tone of the books. Parental advisory/trigger warnings: hell, damn are occasionally used (no s or f words), death, weapons-mainly guns, fighting, deaths by fire, loss of family (spouse and children), prostitution, drinking, burn victim, people being sold and forced to work as slaves in mines, parents abandoning their children (I’ll leave it at that due to spoilers). There are no laws in the Wild North, which result in violence and death on many levels.If I had any critique for the author/book, it would be to infuse more of Nox’s toys into the last book.*I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. The Coilhunter Chronicles is a collection of three books (hopefully with more to come): Coilhunter, Rustkiller, and Dustrunner. This series is definitely meant to be read chronologically, however, each book is a satisfying new adventure. The story follows a bounty hunter dubbed "Coilhunter" (the currency) who is the embodiment of the law as he seeks to avenge his personal loss. He is equal parts steampunk inventor and gunslinger, lending for a fun and fresh approach to the action scenes. The book(s) somehow maintain a perfect balance of suspense, action, levity, isolation, fatalism and hope. The pacing is on-point and strikes a good medium of action with brief respites.Admittedly, once i picked up this book, i couldn't put it down. If you are a fan of action/adventure then this wild-west post-apocalyptic steampunk hybrid will deliver. I haven't read any previous books by Dean F. Wilson, but his stile, pacing and balance reminds of Peter Clines (of whom i am a fan). If i had to pick some previous titlesR.C. Bray narrated this book, and if you haven't heard him yet, he is a treat to listen to. I definitely rank Mr. Bray as one of my top choice narrators, and once again, he consistently delivers with quality characters that are compelling and intriguing.Overall i give this trilogy 5-stars across the board. Any audiobook i can't stop listening to, and especially one that i'd actually listen to again (very few titles make that level), deserves a perfect score.
